Strother Leads Huskies Over Holy Cross

WORCESTER, MA (Dec. 5) - Freshman forward Ann Strother (Castle Rock, CO) scored a career high 18 points to go along with four rebounds and five assists, as the No.3 ranked Connecticut women’s basketball team defeated Holy Cross 68-46, at the Worcester Centrum in Worcester, MA. Connecticut ends the five game road trip 5-0 and moves to 6-0 overall, while Holy Cross drops to 2-3 on the season.
The Huskies started slowly in the first half as Holy Cross jumped out to a 17-15 lead. UConn fought back behind a 10-2 run to take a 25-19 lead. The Crusaders did not go away though as they closed the half on a 6-2 run, for a halftime score of 27-25. Strother and junior Maria Conlon (Derby, CT) led Connecticut in the first half with six points each.
Connecticut once again got off to a sluggish start in the second half as Holy Cross used a 7-2 run to take a 32-29 lead. The lead by the Crusaders marked the first time that the Huskies have trailed this season in the second half. UConn answered once again with a 14-0 run to push out to a 43-32 advantage. Connecticut put the game away with a 23-2 run to extend the lead to 68-40.
Conlon finished with 14 points, five assists and a career high five steals. Junior Diana Taurasi (Chino, CA) added 14 points and six assists, while freshman Nicole Wolff (Walpole, MA) chipped in with nine points. The Huskies outrebounded the Crusaders 32-30 and also caused Holy Cross to turn the ball over 20 times.
Holy Cross was paced by Katie O’Keefe with 23 points and six rebounds.
Connecticut will return to action on Sunday, December 8, against the University of Southern California at the Hartford Civic Center. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
