STORRS, CT (Dec. 6) – Two third-period goals sealed the Huskies’ Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win for the University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team on Friday at the UConn Ice Arena. The Huskies improve to 4-8-1 overall and 3-5-1 MAAC as Army falls to 3-9, 3-7 in the conference.
Defenseman Mark Murphy (Jamestown, RI) put the Huskies on the board in the first period with his first goal of the season. Murphy found the puck between the two faceoff circles and used the screen to put the first goal past Brad Roberts. Matt Owens and Marcus Baxter were credited with the assists.
After a scoreless second period, UConn came back early in the third, as Matt Grew (Yarmouthport, MA) put number two in for the Huskies. Kurt Kamienski (Pittsfield, MA) skated the puck up ice despite being shorthanded, and found Grew in front of the net waiting to put away his second goal of the season. With 1:55 left in the game, the Black Knights pulled goaltender Brad Roberts to use an extra skater. Kamienski broke out into the offensive zone and flipped the puck toward the net as he was forced into the corner. The empty net goal sealed the win for the Huskies.
Jason Carey (Oakdale, MN) stopped all 32 shots he faced, as Roberts made 28 saves.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday, December 7 when they play host to MAAC opponent American International College at 7:30 p.m. at the UConn Ice Arena.
