Huskies Fall, 6-5 to MAAC Opponent American International

STORRS, CT (Dec. 7) – In a back-and-forth game, the University of Connecticut men's ice hockey team fell to the Yellow Jackets of American International College, 6-5 at the UConn Ice Arena Saturday night. The Huskies fall to 4-9-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the MAAC as AIC improves to 4-6-1, 3-5-1 in the conference
The Yellow Jackets got out to a quick lead in the first when Trent Ulmer caught Jason Carey looking the other way and snuck one past him. Ulmer received a quick pass to the right of Carey from Andy Walbert just 1:43 into the first period. AIC increased their lead to two when Scott Bottorff took a shot from in the middle of the faceoff circles. Ulmer and CJ McConnell were credited with the assists. The Huskies put one on the board at the end of the period. DJ Miller took a pass from Adam Rhein and cut their deficit to one when he scored a goal very similar to AIC’s first tally with 30 seconds left on the clock.
The Huskies recovered and even took a two goal lead for some time in the second, scoring three goals. Ron D’Angelo evened up the score, taking a pass from Rhein and skating right up the middle, barreling into the net after the tying the game at two. Matt Grew pulled the Huskies ahead, as he put the puck in right in front of the net on the assist by Kurt Kamienski. Tim Olsen increased the lead as he scored top shelf on the breakaway, Mark Murphy set Olsen up for the Huskies’ fourth goal. The Yellow Jackets filled the gap with a pair of goals late in the period. Bottorff scored his second of the game, as he shot one in from the left of Carey. Andy Luhovy knotted the game at four when he scored with 15 seconds left in the period.
The third period scoring started with another UConn goal by Miller. He faced goaltender Chad Davis head on and put the go-ahead goal top shelf. Kamienski recorded his second assist in the game on the goal. AIC responded with a pair of goals scored right in front of the net. One by Ulmer and the other by Miller to seal the win and go home with their third MAAC win.
Husky net-minder Jason Carey stopped 27 shots in the loss as Davis denied 37 UConn shots.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, December 29 at the UConn Classic in Storrs, CT. UConn will face Findlay at 5:15 following a match-up between Ferris State and Huntsville at 2 p.m. On Monday, December 30, a consolation game will be played at 2 p.m. followed by the championship game at 5:15 for the winners of Sundays’ games.
