STORRS, CT (February 11) — Connecticut women’s soccer All-Americans Casey Zimny (Rochester, NY) and Alexa Borisjuk (North Haven, CT) were selected in the 2002 Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) Draft, held Monday morning at the Sunrise Hilton in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Zimny was taken in the second round with the 10th overall pick by the Washington Freedom, while Borisjuk was picked by the Boston Breakers in the third round with the 19th selection.
Zimny, the 2001 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and member of the All-BIG EAST First Team, anchored a defense that gave up 0.7 goals a game and recorded 13 shutouts. Her lone goal of the season came in UConn’s 3-1 win over No. 4 Notre Dame on Oct. 21, giving her seven goals in her career. A four-year starter at both midfield and defense, Zimny started in 96 games and stands tied for sixth in the UConn record book for games played with 98.
Borisjuk, a midfielder, notched a career-best seven goals in 2001 and added a team-best seven assists for 21 points. Those totals, which ranked her second in scoring on the team, also earned her a spot on the 2001 All-BIG EAST First Team. In 93 career games, Borisjuk recorded 17 goals and 18 assists for 52 points.
The duo, which helped UConn to three straight BIG EAST Northeast Division titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances, become the eighth and ninth Huskies to be drafted by the WUSA. In the league’s inaugural season last year, five former UConn players were selected in the inaugural draft and two were picked in the supplemental draft.
The 2002 WUSA Draft, which consisted of four rounds with eight selections per round, kicked off with the Carolina Courage taking Santa Clara defender Danielle Slaton with the first overall pick. Two other BIG EAST players were drafted – West Virginia’s Katie Barnes (Carolina Courage, ninth pick) and Notre Dame’s Monica Gonzalez (Boston Breakers, 11th pick).
