Huskies Compete at St. Valentine's Invitational

BOSTON, MA (Feb. 9, 2002) -- In its fifth indoor meet of the season, the University of Connecticut men’s track and field team posted seven top-three performances, including three individual victories, at the St. Valentine’s Invitational in Boston, MA, Saturday afternoon. No team scores were kept.
Leading the way for the Huskies were senior Elliott Blount (Freeport, NY) and junior Joe Mendel (Wayne, NJ), fresh off school records in the 800-meters and 400-meters, respectively, at last Saturday’s Penn State Tri-Meet. Blount ran to a first-place finish in the 500-meters with 1:03.03 while Mendel took first in the 200-meters with an effort of 21.84.
Sophomore Joe DiCola (Courtland Manor, NY) also claimed first in the pole vault with 15’7”.
Freshmen Ron Cook (Philadelphia, PA) and Steve Cousin (Bristol, PA) went 2-3 in the triple jump with efforts of 46’91/2” and 45’9”, respectively. Junior Mike Deibler (Monroe, NY) placed second in the high jump with a season-best 6’91/2” while junior Mark Jellison (Reading, MA) rounded out the Husky top-three finishers with a third-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles with 7.65.
UConn moves onto the championship portion of its season next weekend at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship in Syracuse, NY.
