NORTHFORD, CT (March 1) – Brian Herbert and Ryan Olson each tallied a goal and two assists to lift Quinnipiac University, 6-2, over the University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team in a MAAC League match-up on Friday night at the Northford Ice Pavilion.
The win clinched the No. 2 position for Quinnipiac (17-12-5, 15-6-5) in the MAAC standing heading into the playoffs. UConn dropped its record to 11-15-7, 10-10-5, and falls to seventh place in the standing after tonight’s other MAAC match-ups.
Quinnipiac notched the game’s first goal at the 7:55 mark of the first period on a shot from Neil Breen. Connecticut counter acted under a minute later when Beau McLaughin (Virginia Beach, VA) nailed the puck into the net off rebounded shots by Bret Bostock (Phoenix, AZ) and DJ Miller (Mount Lebanon, PA). The Braves’ Herbert and Todd Bennett tallied the next two scores to take the two-goal advantage heading into the second period.
Miller took a slap shot from the point during an UConn power play opportunity to cut the Huskies scoring deficit by one 4:32 into the period. Adam Rhein (Cottage Grove, MN) assisted on the goal. Dan Ennis responded by scoring a power play goal of his own to raise the score to 4-2. Olson closed out the period with 52-seconds remaining.
Quinnipiac topped off its scoring two-minutes into the final stanza on a shot from Chris White.
Jason Carey (Oakdale, MN) got the start in net, his first Friday night start since January 11, recording 30 saves. Jamie Holden earned the Braves’ win in goal stopping 43 shots. Despite the loss, Connecticut out shot Quinnipiac, 45-36.
