Huskies Swept by Syracuse

STORRS, CT (March 30) – Syracuse pitchers Heather Brown and Tara DiMaggio allowed a combined six hits and one run as the Orangewomen swept the University of Connecticut softball team, 7-0 and 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at the UConn Softball Field in Storrs.
In game one, Syracuse’s Katie Kaempfer doubled to left center field, followed by Cheryl Julicher’s homerun over the right field fence to give the Orangewomen a 2-0 lead after the first inning of play. Syracuse collected four more runs in the third inning to take the commanding lead. Christina Holowich reached first base on a fielder’s choice after Kristen Collins singled. Holowich stole second,
and then Rachel Park singled to the left side allowing Holowich to score. Julicher earned her second hit of the afternoon on a single, and then advanced to second base. Tanya Rose notched a double sending home Julicher and Park, and then Julie Dunn singled scoring Rose raising the score to 6-0. The Orangewomen’s last run was scored in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Collins.
Lisa Girolamo (Ashby, MA) went three-for-three collecting three of the Huskies four hits in the game.
Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) took the loss for the Huskies on the mound, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs. Caryn Haskins (East Freetown, MA) and Jess Gurney (Williamstown, MA) each came in as relief for UConn pitching two innings apiece. Heather Brown pitched the complete game for Syracuse allowing four hits and no runs.
In game two, Syracuse struck early again. Kaempfer, batting second in the first inning, and hit a homerun to get the early lead. Syracuse took the 3-0 lead after the third inning of play. Collins singled to left center field. Holowich reached first base on a sac bunt, which was an error on UConn’s Girolamo, and advanced Collins to third base. Holowich stole second base and then Kaempfer doubled to right center field scoring both Collins and Holowich.
UConn’s only run of the two game series came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, NC) reached base on an error by SU second baseman Rachel Park. Girolamo was then hit by a pitch, which advanced Campen to second base. Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, MA) singled and received the RBI on the days only run. Syracuse capped of its scoring on a Holowich double early in the seventh inning.
Campen was one-for-three including the Huskies only run of the day.
Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) was credited with the Husky loss pitching 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and three runs. Haskins came in as relief, pitching 4.2 innings allowing five hits and only one run. Tara DiMaggio pitched the complete game for Syracuse allowing two hits and one run.
UConn will travel to Central Connecticut State University on Tuesday, April 4 for a doubleheader to begin at 4:30 pm.
