Huskies Pick Up Second BIG EAST Win of Season

Senior Lisa Girolamo went 2-for-5 against the Panthers with two runs
PITTSBURGH, PA (April 14, 2002) - Rain played havoc on the Univerity of Connecticut softball team on Sunday afternoon, but the Huskies still managed to come out on top in extra innings over Pittsburgh, 5-3. The second game was suspended after one inning of play with UConn leading, 1-0. The game will resume tomorrow at 11 a.m.
The win brings the Huskies record to 8-24 overall and gives them their second BIG EAST win to move to 2-9. The Panthers fall to 17-26 overall and 3-8 in the BIG EAST.
Pitt put itself on the board first, with a run in the second inning, but UConn responded with three runs in the top of the fifth.
Pitcher Claire Hesson (Jr., Kennebunkport, ME) started off the inning with a walk before freshman Suzy deBary (Roxbury, CT) came in to pinch run for her. Freshman Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY) singled to left field, advancing deBary to second. An error by Pittsburgh’s pitcher on the next at bat put freshman Ashleigh Campen on first, loading the bases. Senior Lisa Girolamo (Ashby, MA) then reached on a fielder’s choice, forcing deBary out at home. Junior Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, PA) also reached on a fielder’s choice, but the Panthers were unable to convert the out and Schettini scored. Then, with the bases loaded, freshman Jen D’Angelo singled, scoring both Campen and Girolamo for the final two runs of the inning.
Pittsburgh tied the game up with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Huskies came back in the top of the ninth with two more runs that the Panthers couldn’t answer.
Campen began the inning off with a single to center field and advanced to second when Girolamo singled to left field. Again, the Panthers were unable to convert on a fielder’s choice out, and Arbogast was able to make it to first, loading the bases for junior Elisa Brinkworth (Amherst, NY), who singled, scoring both Campen and Girolamo for the game-winning runs.
Hesson picked up the win to move to 2-10 on the season , while Pitt pitcher Nikki Gasti took the loss to fall to 8-14.
Leading the Huskies at the plate was D’Angelo, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
UConn resumes play on its second game against Pittsburgh at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 15.
