Huskies in sixth place at BIG EAST Championship

NOTRE DAME, IN (April 20) - The University of Connecticut golf team stands in sixth place overall after the first day of competition at the 2002 BIG EAST Championship at the Warren Golf Course. The Huskies shot a combined 613 during the first two rounds, as Virginia Tech leads the field after shooting rounds of 290 and 287 for a 577.
Individually, St. John's Andrew Svoboda will take a one-stroke lead into the final round on Sunday. Svoboda, a tri-winner of last year's championship, fired a one-over par 71 for the first round and followed it with an even-par 70 for his 141 total.
UConn freshman Justin Ciombor led the Huskies on the first day of competition. He shot a 73 in the first round and followed it with a 76 for a combined score of 149, good enough to tie him for 13th overall heading into the final round. Senior Sean Vigue carded a 152 on the day and is tied for 19th place.
Freshman Mike Murphy carded a 155 for the day (T23rd) while seniors Kevin Coghlan and Kevin O'Connor finished the day with scores of 157 and 160, respectively.
The final round of the 2002 BIG EAST Championship will be played on Sunday, April 21 with the first group of golfers set to tee off at the Warren Golf Course at 8 a.m.
