STORRS, CT (April 25, 2002) – The University of Connecticut softball team picked up a win Thursday afternoon, 2-0, over Quinnipiac at the UConn Softball Field. The second game was canceled because of inclement weather.
With the win, the Huskies move to 11-30 on the season, while Quinnipiac drops to 16-18 overall.
UConn put itself on the board with a run in the first and another in the sixth for the win.
With two outs in the first, senior Lisa Girolamo (Ashby, MA) was walked and moved to second when junior Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) singled through the left side. Then, a single by freshman Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) to left center scored Girolamo for the Huskies first run of the day.
In the sixth, freshman Ashleigh Campen started off the inning when she reached on an error by Quinnipiac’s shortstop. She moved to second when Girolamo singled through the left side. Both runners advanced off a wild pitch, and Campen scored when Cook reached on an error by Quinnipiac’s second baseman.
Starter Claire Hesson (Jr., Kennebunkport, ME) picked up the win to move to 4-12 on the season after striking out a career-high 11 batters and allowing only three hits. Quinnipiac starter Alisha Zabel fell to 7-7.
At the plate, both Cook and D’Angelo went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Huskies head into their final weekend of conference action at noon on Saturday, April 27, when they face Rutgers.
