PISCATAWAY, NJ (April 27, 2002) - After dropping the first game of a doubleheader to Rutgers, 1-0, the University of Connecticut softball team came back to take the second, 4-1.
The split moves the Huskies record to 12-31 overall and 4-14 in the BIG EAST, while RU goes to 18-22 overall, with an 8-8 BIG EAST mark.
In the first game, UConn was only out-hit by the Scarlet Knights by one, three-to-four, but that one hit made all the difference as RU tallied three of those four hits in the first three at bats of the sixth inning, including a lead-off double.
Husky starter Barb Cook (Jr., Conklin, NY) took the loss to fall to 7-17 on the season, while striking out three batters. Andria Koehler for Rutgers moved to 7-8 with the win.
Freshman Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY), junior Elisa Brinkworth (Amherst, NY) and freshman Jen Ward (Gales Ferry, CT) accounted for the Huskies hits in the game with one a piece.
In the second game, one inning was all UConn needed to put away RU, as the Huskies tallied four runs in the fifth inning.
Freshman Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) started off the inning with a walk, and moved to second when sophomore Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, PA) was hit by a pitch, the first of two times it happened in the game. Brinkworth then singled up the middle, scoring D’Angelo and advancing Arbogast to second. A double in the next at bat by freshman Jess Gurney (Williamstown, MA) scored Arbogast and moved Brinkworth to third, where she scored from after a fielding error by Rutger’s shortstop. At that point, freshman Patty Lowe (Stamford, CT) pinch ran for Gurney, and moved to third when junior Bethany Watrous (Worcester, MA) reached on an error by RU shortstop Meaghan Asselta. In the next at bat, Schettini grounded out to the shortstop, but it was enough to bring in Lowe for the final run of the inning.
Rutgers attempted a comeback in the sixth inning, but were only able to manage one run.
Starter Claire Hesson (Jr., Kennebunkport, ME) picked up the win, moving to 5-12 while striking out two and walking only two. Leah Black took the loss for the Scarlet Knights and fell to 8-10.
This time around, UConn and RU went hit-for-hit, each tallying five. The Huskies were led by Gurney, who went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Brinkworth, who also went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
The Huskies finish BIG EAST play at noon on Sunday, April 28, as they travel to Villanova.
