Women's Rowing Takes Eighth at the BIG EAST Challenge

WORCESTER, MA (April 28) – The University of Connecticut women’s rowing team placed eighth in a field of nine team at the 2002 BIG EAST Rowing Challenge on Sunday afternoon. Competing in the 2002 BIG EAST Challenge along with Connecticut was Boston College, Syracuse, Villanova, Georgetown, West Virginia, Rutgers, Miami and Notre Dame. The event, which is only in its second year, was held at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA.
Syracuse captured the 2002 title for the second consecutive year winning four of six races en route to 117 total points. Notre Dame finished second with 109 points, while Boston College (87), Georgetown (67) and Rutgers (64) rounded out the top five. Miami (61), Villanova (49), Connecticut (47) and West Virginia (20) completed the competition field.
Connecticut’s top finish was fifth place in the Grand Final of the Women’s Second Varsity Eight race. The crew completed the event in a time of 7:33.72, after finishing in third place in the earlier heat. The Women’s Novice Four placed fifth in their race, ending in a time of 9:05.70.
The A squad in the Women’s Varsity Four finished in fourth in the second heat, and advanced to the Petite Final ending in a time of 9:12.19, good for fourth place. The Women’s Novice Eight took first place in the Petite Final finishing in a time of 7:42.99, after finishing fourth in the earlier heat. The final event was the Women’s Varsity Eight race, in which UConn earned a second place finish in the Petite Final.
The Huskies will compete at the Dad Vail Championship on May 5 & 6 in Philadelphia, PA.
