STORRS, CT (April 9, 2002) - The University of Connecticut softball team dropped a heartbreaker, 2-1, in 11 innings to the University of Rhode Island, Tuesday afternoon at the UConn softball field.
With the loss, the Huskies drop to 6-21 overall, while the Rams improve to 14-17.
URI put itself on the board in the first inning with the help of a UConn error, but were not able to score again during regular-inning play.
The Huskies utilized that scoring slump to tie up the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Junior Elisa Brinkworth (Amherst, NY) reached on an error by URI’s shortstop then stole second to put herself in scoring position. Freshman Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) then singled to right field, and Brinkworth slid under the tag at the plate.
Both teams were scoreless in the next three innings before the Rams used a single and a double to take the game in the top of the eleventh.
Junior pitcher Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) took the loss for the Huskies, falling to 5-11 on the season. URI pitcher Gwen Rack took the win, after coming in at relief for starter Lee-Anne Stanovich, to move to 10-8 overall.
Leading the Huskies at the plate was Jen D’Angelo, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Gabby Zagami led the Rams with a 3-for-4 effort, including an RBI.
UConn plays host to BIG EAST foe St. John’s at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, in a make-up game.
