STORRS, CT (May 1, 2002) - After taking the early lead, the University of Connecticut softball team was overcome by Hofstra late in the game to drop a 4-1 decision Wednesday evening at the UConn Softball Field.
With the loss, the Huskies fall to 13-33 overall, while the Pride move to 22-25.
A run in the first off a single by freshman Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY), another by junior Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) and an error by Pride center fielder Heather Brousseau gave UConn the early lead, which it held on to for the next three innings before giving up two runs in the fifth and one each in the sixth and the seventh.
Down by three entering the bottom of the seventh, the Huskies staged a comeback when freshman Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) started the inning off with a double and sophomore Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, PA) walked, but outs in the next three at bats ended the rally.
Cook took the loss for UConn to fall to 8-18 on the season, while Hofstra pitcher Stefanie Kenney moved to 12-7.
Schettini led the Huskies at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort and one run. Cook, D’Angelo and freshman Jess Gurney (Williamstown, MA) tallied the other three Husky hits of the game.
UConn heads to UMass on Friday, for a 5 p.m. match-up with the Minutewomen.
