STORRS, CT (June 13) – Michelle Wardwell (Norwich, CT) and Lindsay Clarkson (Baldwinsville, NY) of the University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team were named to the 2002 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division I Academic All-America Team. Wardwell and Clarkson joined 62 other Division I women’s lacrosse student-athletes for this year’s nominations.
A senior, Wardwell earned a double major of Psychology and Sociology graduating in May of 2002. She was selected to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team and as a New England Scholar-Athlete in 2001. Moving between the midfield and defensive positions, Wardwell played in 57 career games and collected 89 ground balls.
Also a senior, Clarkson graduated with a double major of Physiology and Neurobiology in May of 2002. She was a 2001 BIG EAST Academic All-Star, and was previously named an Academic All-American. A four-year letterwinner on defense, Clarkson played in 53 career games collecting 36 ground balls, causing 26 turnovers and had 17 draw controls.
The Huskies completed the 2002 season with an overall record of 9-7, one win shy of tying the program record for victories in a season. In only the second season of the BIG EAST Conference lacrosse league, UConn held a .500 record of 3-3, shattering the team’s 2001 record of 1-6. The Huskies place three players on the 2002 All-BIG EAST Teams, the most in program history.
