STORRS, CT (January 10) – The University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team scored four third period goals to take a come-from-behind victory over Fairfield University, 5-4, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up on Friday night at the UConn Ice Arena. The Huskies improved their record to 5-12-2 overall, 4-7-2 in the MAAC, while the Stags fell to 3-13-1 overall, 2-7-1 in the league.
Fairfield jumped on the board at the 3:03 mark of the first period. From in front of the net between the face-off circles, Joseph Maglaque took a shot that bounced in off the pads of UConn goalie Jason Carey (Oakdale, MN). Exactly four-minutes later, Matt Grew (Yarmouthport, MA) broke out from a face-off past the Stag defense and netted his second short-handed goal of the season into the top shelf of the Fairfield net.
Fairfield took control of the second period taking the 3-1 lead. After an initial Fairfield shot, Carey could not get a hold to make the save causing a Husky and Stag scramble in the crease pushing the puck of the goal line. Brian Payant was credited with the score at the 2:01 mark. Lyon Porter pushed the Stags ahead at the 5:38 mark when he slid the puck across the crease banking it in off the opposite post. The Stags out shot UConn, 17-8 in the second stanza.
Connecticut came out strong in the third period scoring three straight goals in an eight-minute time span. Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, MN) stickhandled the puck through the Stag defense taking the shot from just outside the face-off circle near the goal 2:04 into the period. He notched his second goal at the 4:28 mark of the period when he five-holed it through the legs of Fairfield net minder Michael Wolfe. Line mates Ron D’Angelo (Massapequa, NY) and Matt Owens (Framingham, MA) assisted on both goals. At the midmark of the period (10:04), Chris Uber (Ithaca, NY) rebounded in a shot from Beau McLaughin (Virginia Beach, VA). Eric St. Arnauld (Marquette, MI) was also credited with an assist. At the 11:27 mark of the stanza, Steve Calderara scored on the power play to tie the score at four apiece. With 5:37 left on the clock, Bret Bostock (Phoenix, AZ) knocked in a rebounded shot for the game-winning tally.
Carey stopped 26 shots on goal for the victory, while Fairfield’s Wolfe recorded 28 saves. In the end, UConn nearly out shot Fairfield, 33-30.
The Huskies and the Stags will battle again on Saturday evening at 7:30 pm at the UConn Ice Arena.
