The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team will travel to MAAC Conference rival Army (Tate Rink) on Friday, and then head down state to Yale (Ingalls Rink) on Saturday. Both games are to begin at 7:00 pm. The women are headed to Hanover, NH, to face the Dartmouth Big Green on Saturday and Sunday, both game starting at 2:00 pm at Thompson Arena.
Connecticut owns a record of 5-14-3 overall, 4-9-3 in the MAAC League heading into its last weekend of play in January. Kurt Kamienski is still on top of the scoring list for the 2002-03 season. To date, he has scored seven goals and added 12 assists for 19 points, including two power play goals.
UConn and Army have a history between the two programs dating back to the 1968-69 season. Army holds the overall advantage in the series at 9-15-5. Since Army joined the MAAC for the 2001-02 season, UConn has claimed three wins, and the teams have tied three times. All three ties came last season (2001-02), a 2-2 tie at UConn and then 3-3 and 4-4 ties at West Point. Most recently, the Huskies shutout Army, 3-0, on December 6 behind goals from Mark Murphy, Matt Grew and Kurt Kamienski.
The Huskies are winless against Yale, having met only two times before tonight. The first match-up was in the 1971-72 season, a 16-2 defeat in New Haven. The second time was in UConn’s MAAC Championship season, 1999-2000. The Huskies fell 3-2 in the UMass Lowell Tournament in Lowell, Mass. Connecticut is 1-4-1 against ECAC Teams since becoming a Division I squad for the 1998-99 season. The team’s first win was a 5-4 overtime victory over Colgate this season. The tie was a 2-2 score at Vermont in the 2001-02 season.
For the women, UConn and Dartmouth will be meeting for the first time in the short history of Connecticut women’s ice hockey. The Big Green is currently ranked No. 4 in the country, and UConn is seeking its first win over a ranked team this season. The Huskies are only 1-6-0 against ECAC Teams, with a win over Princeton in the 2001-02 season. The Huskies hold a record of 7-12-4, and are led by Sara Mahoney with nine goals and two assists for 11 points.
