Huskies Hold onto Lead to Beat Army

WEST POINT, NY (January 24) – The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team held onto the lead to defeat Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Army, 6-4, at Tate Rink in West Point, NY on Friday night. UConn improved its record to 6-14-3 overall, 5-9-3 in the MAAC, while Army fell to 10-12 overall, 6-10 in league.
Army opened the scoring 4:46 into the first period on a goal from Joe Boyle. UConn countered at the 9:25 mark on a power play goal from DJ Miller (Mount Lebanon, PA), with assists from Kurt Kamienski (Pittsfield, MA) and Eric Nelson (Big Lake, MN).
Ron D’Angelo (Massapequa, NY) gave the Huskies the 2-1 lead just over one-minute into the second stanza. At the 6:40 mark, Chris MacLeod evened the score at two apiece on the power play. With 1:09 left in the second period, Miller notched his second goal of the night.
UConn took the 5-2 lead in the first half of the third period on tallies from Kamienski and Matt Owens (Framingham, MA), at the 4:25 and 9:47 marks, respectively. Army came close, bringing the score to 5-4 in a 25-second time span. At 11:28, Tim Quinlan scored, followed by a Nic Serre tally seconds later. Marcus Baxter (Coral Spring, FL) capped off the Huskies scoring for the win at the 14:44 mark.
UConn’s Jason Carey earned the win making 40 stops, while Brad Roberts recorded 23 saves in net for Army. The Black Knights out shot UConn, 44-29, in their loss.
UConn will travel down state to face Yale University on Saturday night at Ingalls Rink in New Haven at 7:00 pm.
