NEW HAVEN, CT (Oct. 12) – The University of Connecticut’s men’s golf team tied Lynn for seventh out of 18 schools competing in the MacDonald Cup this weekend at the par-70 Yale Golf Club in New Haven. The event was shortened to two rounds due to Sunday’s rains. UConn shot a 597 (+37) at the event which was won by Penn State with a score of 573 (+13). For the third consecutive tournament, UConn beat at least one BIG EAST Conference member (St. John’s this time), a feat the team did not accomplish all of last fall.
For the fourth time in UConn’s last five team rounds, a Husky golfer finished in the red as Mike Murphy shot a two-under-par 68 in Saturday’s opening round. He shot a 73 in the second round to finish with a +1 score of 141 that was just two strokes behind tournament champion Mark Leon of Penn State who was one-under-par at 139 on the tournament. Justin Ciombor had a solid performance, shooting a 72 and a 75 to finish at +7 and in a tie for 13th place. Jordan Burke was next for UConn, tying for 64th with a 156, followed by Dan White’s 158 that tied him for 79th and Daniel Keefe’s 159 which tied him for 81st.
The Huskies return to action on Oct. 20-21 when they head to Brewster, Mass. for the New England Fall Championships.
