Huskies Open Season With Super Show

STORRS, Conn. (October 18, 2003) ­ The two-time defending national champion Connecticut women’s basketball team got the 2003-04 season officially started on Saturday evening with its annual Super Show festivities before a crowd of 9,188 at Gampel Pavilion.
The highlights included the presentation of the 2003 NCAA Championship rings to the team and coaching staff as well as the unveiling of the 2003 NCAA Championship banner.
The Huskies defeated its practice squad 64-41 in a scrimmage which saw all 12 active Huskies post points.
Junior Ashley Battle led all players with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Diana Taurasi (Chino, Calif.), Willnet Crockett (Harbor City, Calif.) and Jessica Moore (Palmer, Alaska) each chipped in seven.
Barbara Turner (Cleveland, Ohio) paced the Huskies on the glass with a team-best eight rebounds while adding three assists and a steal.
Taurasi was crowned the champion of the 3-point contest which saw her defeat Ashley Valley (Colchester, Vt.) in the final round by the score of 5-3.
Connecticut returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 8 when it hosts Team Concept in its first exhibition game of the season beginning at 7:00 p.m. (ET) at Gampel Pavilion.
