Men's Golf Opens Spring Season in South Carolina

ROCK HILL, S.C. (March 10) – Junior Jordan Burke turned in the top round for the University of Connecticut men’s golf team on Monday as the Huskies opened their 2003 campaign at the 36-hole Winthrop Waterford Invitational at the par-72 Waterford Golf Club in Rock Hill, S.C. The Huskies shot a 318 as a team in Monday’s opening round to tie DePaul for 15th place out of 19 competing teams. Charleston Southern was the lone team to shoot under par on Monday and grabbed the opening round lead by shooting a 285 (-3).
Burke, playing in just his third collegiate event, shot a three-over-par 75 to pace the Huskies and tie for 24th place overall. Sophomore Justin Ciombor tied for 40th overall with a 77 (+5), followed by Mike Murphy, who tied for 75th with a 82 (+10) and Nathan Thomsen who tied for 84th by shooting an 84 (+12). Daniel Keefe tied for 91st place with an 88 (+16) to round out the participating Huskies.
The second and final round will go off on Tuesday morning.
