Huskies Edged by No. 15 Yale

NEW HAVEN, CT (March 2) – The University of Connecticut women’s lacrosse team came close with a second half surge, but fell to No. 15 nationally ranked Yale University on Johnson Field on Wednesday afternoon in New Haven. The Huskies record fell to 1-1 on the early season, while Yale picked up its first win to stand at 1-1.
The Eli’s dominated the first half, leading 8-3 at its end. Tanya Kotowicz (Hicksville, NY) scored on a free position shot, and Kariane Lauri (Memphis, NY) notched her two goals all in the first half for UConn. Yale’s Miles Whitman ended the half with a three-goal surge to give the Eli’s a cushion heading into the second half. UConn’s April Pollock (North Syracuse, NY) tended net in the first half recording six saves.
UConn dominated play in the second half, having the defense limit the Eli’s to only one goal and the offense to output three goals. Abbey VanDeusen (Fayetteville, NY) started the Huskies four-goal run, followed by two Tracy Mullaney (Cockeysville, NY) scores. Mullaney’s second goal, assisted by Lauri, brought the Huskies within three with 1:41 left in regulation. Lauri netted her hat trick, on an assist from Mullaney, with 31-seconds remaining, bringing the game to 9-7 in favor of Yale. The Huskies then won the next draw control and brought the ball up field to be awarded a free position shot. Mullaney missed the shot with 14-seconds left on the clock, giving the Eli’s the victory. Jen Wong (Greenwood Village, CO) played goal in the second half allowing only one score, and making eight saves.
Connecticut travels to Florida for spring break and will face Lafayette on Wednesday, March 19 at 3:00 pm in Orlando.
