UConn Splits in Second Day of New Mexico State Invitational

LAS CRUCES, NM (March 21) – The University of Connecticut softball team split two games at the New Mexico State Invitational on Friday to tally a record of 5-11-1. UConn lost game one, 9-1, to Brigham Young (17-7) and then defeated Texas-San Antonio (10-20), 6-2 later in the day.
The Huskies started the day with a 9-1 loss to Brigham Young. UConn came out quickly, scoring their lone run in the top of the first inning. Barb Cook (Conklin, NY) led off with a walk and advanced to second on the next play. She then took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the catcher.
The Cougars answered right back however, tying the game at one in the bottom half of the inning. Oli Keohohou hit a single to center field and later scored on a single to center by Brooke Cadiente. BYU tallied another in the following inning. The Cougars went on to score nine runs as they held UConn scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Cook took the loss for the Huskies as she allowed seven hits. Niki Anderson earned the win.
In the later game, the Huskies pulled past San Antonio with a four-run third inning. After the Roadrunners scored a pair of goals in the top of the inning, freshman Nikki Ribeiro (Norton, MA) started off a rally with a single to center field. Cook followed with a double to score Ribeiro. Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, NC) added another single with Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY) hitting another right after. Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) had the fifth hit of the rally, earning three RBI on the play.
The Huskies scored two more runs the following inning, finishing up the Roadrunners, 6-2.
Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) earned the win for UConn, striking out four batters. Amanda Horton suffered the loss, allowing 10 hits.
The Huskies will return to action at the New Mexico State Invitational on Saturday, March 22. They will face Missouri-Kansas City and New Mexico at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. eastern, respectively.
