Huskies Split with Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, VA (April 12)-- The University of Connecticut softball team split a pair of games with conference opponent, Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at the Virginia Tech softball field. The Huskies lost the first game 4-0, and rallied back to win the second, 5-2. UConn moves to 3-1 in BIG EAST play, and 14-14-1 overall. Virginia Tech stands at 3-5 in the conference and 15-21 overall.
The Huskies allowed the Hokies to score their first two runs in the bottom of the second inning, and the next two, in the bottom of the fourth. The Hokies were led by Shanel Garofalo and Sarah Prosise, who each earned two hits. Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, PA), and Elisa Brinkworth (Amherst,NY), were the only two Huskies who were able to get hits off Virginia Tech's pitcher Katie Maynard in the first game.
UConn came out strong in game two and got on the board in the first inning. Barb Cook (Conklin, NY), led off the inning with a walk, and then reached second after a single by Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, NC). Campen was the first Husky to score after crossing the plate due to a throwing error. Bethany Watrous (Worcester, MA), earned an RBI as she belted a single to centerfield, allowing Jen D'Angleo (Wyomissing, PA), to score and pulling the Huskies ahead 2-0.
UConn's next two runs were earned in the top of the fifth inning, as Cook doubled and D'Angelo singled, earning them each an RBI.
Virginia Tech tried to rally back, scoring a run in the fifth, moving the score to 4-1, but UConn would earn another insurance run in the top of the sixth and allow the Hokies to score only once more.
Cook took the loss for UConn in game one, and slips to 4-5 on the year while Maynard earned the win improving her record to 7-8. Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) pitched all seven innings in game two and recorded the win. She moves to 7-5 on the season.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, April 13, as they travel to Pittsburgh for a double header. Game time is set for 11 am.
