PITTSBURGH, PA (April 13) - The University of Connecticut softball team split another pair of BIG EAST games this weekend, this time with the Pittsburgh Panthers on the road on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies took game one, 4-3 but fell short in the second game, losing 3-1. UConn now holds a record of 15-15-1 overall and 4-2 in BIG EAST games. The Panthers stand at 18-24 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
Connecticut scored all of their runs in game one in the fifth inning. Bethany Watrous (Worcester, MA) started the inning with a walk and scored as Ashleigh Campen (Rougemont, NC) reached on an error by the Panthers’ shortstop. Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY) hit a triple to left field to earn two RBI. Jen D’Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) hit a single to send Schettini in for the winning run. Pittsburgh was able to disperse three runs throughout the game, but could not put the fourth on the board to tie the game. Michelle Caouette (Wynantskill, NY) earned the win for UConn, before she was relieved by Barb Cook (Conklin, NY). Nikki Gasti suffered the loss.
In game two, the Huskies scored first, putting a run on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Schettini scored the only run of the game for UConn, getting on base with a single to right field and scored on a single that Maggie Arbogast (Ambler, PA) hit to center field.
The Panthers answered right back, however, as Beth Gill led off the bottom of the inning with a double to center field. She scored as the very next batter hit a single. The winning run was scored the same inning and Pittsburgh added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to come away with the win. Connecticut’s Claire Hesson (Kennebunkport, ME) took home the loss and Janelle Pepe earned the win in game two.
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday April 15 when they play host to non-conference opponent Massachusetts for one game at 3:30 p.m.
