Huskies Drop 6-2 Loss to UMass

AMHERST, MA (April 23) – The University of Connecticut softball team suffered a 6-2 loss to Massachusetts on Wednesday after pulling out a 1-0 win in the bottom of the seventh a week earlier. The Huskies fall to 18-19-1 as the Minutewomen improve to 26-12 on the season.
Nikki Ribeiro (Norton, MA) started things off for UConn in the top of the third inning, hitting a single through the left side of the field and was driven in by Mandy Schettini (Coxsackie, NY) right away. Schettini knocked a triple to right field and came home as Jen D'Angelo (Wyomissing, PA) reached first on an error. The Minutewomen answered back with one run in the bottom of the inning and added three more in the bottom of the fourth to pull ahead.
Katie Jo Kelley started the fourth with a walk and was replaced on the bases with Kristi Stefanoni. Stefanoni stole second and then scored on Jamie Cahalan's double for the tying run. Cahalan scored on Emily Robustelli's single that earned her two RBI. UMass added two more runs in the fifth inning to finish up with six runs.
Connecticut totaled five hits in the rematch and committed no errors as UMass had seven hits but committed two errors. Michelle Caouette suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs. Claire Hesson relieved her in the fourth inning, finishing the game. Massachusetts' Kaila Holtz earned the win, striking out eight batters.
The Huskies return home on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27. UConn plays host to Syracuse on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon and Notre Dame on Sunday for another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
