NEW HAVEN, CT (April 6) – Sophomore Justin Ciombor finished just one stroke off of medalist pace, while three Huskies placed in the top five, to lead the University of Connecticut men’s golf team to the overall championship at the 22-team Yale Spring Open at the Yale Golf Club in New Haven. It marks the first time that UConn has won a spring tournament since 1997 when the Huskies captured titles at the Rhode Island Invitational and the New England Championship. UConn’s two-round total of 612 was a comfortable nine strokes better than second place Binghamton’s 621.
Ciombor shot a combined 151 (+11) to lead the Huskies and place second overall in a field of 114 golfers. Harvard’s Andrew Klein took home medalist honors by shooting a 150. Huskies Daniel Keefe and Anthony Hrenko tied for fifth overall with matching scores of 153 (+13). Mike Murphy tied for 10th with a 155 (+15) while Jordan Burke tied for 24th with a 160 (+20). During the tournament, UConn golfers shot nine of their 10 rounds (90%) under 80 at the par-70 course. The spring thus far had seen Huskies break 80 just 13 times out of 61 previous rounds (21%).
The Huskies return to action next weekend when they compete in the New England Championships in Providence.
