STORRS, CT (May 29) – Becky Congdon (Preston, CT), Jennifer Cooley (New Hartford, CT) and Tracy Mulligan (Easton, CT) of the University of Connecticut women’s rowing team were named Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athletes on the association’s All-New England Team. For the 2002-03 academic year, 100 Division I female student-athletes received the National Scholar-Athlete Award.
Congdon was named to the All-New England Team for the second straight year, as a member of the Physical Therapy program. Congdon just completed her fourth season as part of the UConn rowing team, as she has been a member of varsity eight squad for the last two seasons.
Cooley, who is now a three-time National Scholar-Athlete, was also named to the All-New England Team in the Education program. Colley was also named an UConn Club Outstanding Scholar Athlete and to the Verizon Academic All- District I Women’s At-Large Team this past spring. A three-year member of the varsity eight rowing squad, Cooley has developed into a strong leader for the Connecticut rowing program. A walk-on freshman, Cooley has been an integral part of the building of the young seven-year program. She has held the coxswain of the varsity eight boat for the last three seasons, proving she is a leader to the team.
Mulligan completed her second season as part of the Connecticut rowing team. In 2001, she was part of the Novice Eight squad, but jumped to the Varsity Eight boat in 2002. She is majoring in the Elementary Education program.
The award, in its fifth year, is designed to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains during the current season. The criteria include meeting eligibility rules defined by her institution, participating in their second, third or fourth years of eligibility, participating in at least 75% of the season’s races in the varsity boat, the student-athlete’s head coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA and the student-athlete must have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA through the fall semester of the current season.
