STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 13) - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team continued its shutout streak by blanking Brown 2-0 at Morrone Stadium Wednesday evening. The win marked UConn's fifth-consecutive victory and eighth in the last nine games. The Huskies are now 10-5-0 overall (6-2-0 BIG EAST), while Brown fell to 4-7-0 on the season (1-2-0 Ivy League).
The game was scoreless in the first half with UConn out-shooting Brown 9-2. Freshman Karyn Riviere (Guilford, Conn.) put the Huskies on the board 1-0 at the 54:13 mark as she tapped in a perfect pass by junior defender Karlyn Miselis (Glastonbury, Conn.). The goal was Riviere's fourth on the season.
Miselis then tallied her second point of the night and season at 70:51 as she set up senior forward Jessica Gjertsen (Stony Plain, Alberta). Gjertsen tucked the ball into the lower right corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season, tying her for the team lead.
BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week Megan Jessee (Orefield, Pa.) continued her stellar play as she turned away all four of the Bears' shots on net. Jessee’s shutout streak moves to 348:14, not allowing a goal since 4:38 into the Georgetown game on Oct. 3. The best scoring chance for Brown came with 30 minutes remaining in the game as Susie Keller put a shot on that was saved by a diving Jessee. Keller then tried to score on the rebound, but Jessee knocked the ball down while still on the ground to quell the Brown offense.
The Husky defense also continued to shut down opposing offenses as they allowed Brown just four shots and one corner kick. In the last three games, UConn has allowed the opposition an average of just over four shots a game.
Connecticut will return to BIG EAST action this Sunday as they travel to Villanova to face the Wildcats at 1:00 p.m.
