Canisius Tops Mens Hockey, 5-1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Nov. 20) -- The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to Canisius College on Saturday evening at Buffalo State Sports Arena. UConn falls to 1-9-1 overall, 0-3-0 in Atlantic Hockey, while the Golden Griffins move their record to 6-5-1 and 5-1-0 in Atlantic Hockey.
Canisius took a 1-0 lead with a goal by Mike Ruberto at 12:32 in the first, but the Huskies quickly knotted the score at one as freshman John Stockler (Princeton, Minn.) netted his first collegiate goal at 13:19 in the opening period from seniors Mark Murphy (Jamestown, R.I.) and Beau McLaughlin (Virginia Beach, Va.).
However, the Golden Griffins followed with four unanswered power play goals to secure the victory. Michael Cohen tallied two in the second period at 9:10 and 11:01. Then Josh Zavitz and Fred Coccimiglio followed with theirs at 1:22 and 1:52, respectively, in the third.
Bryan Worosz stopped 37 shots in net for Canisius and Connecticut’s goaltender Scott Tomes (Windham, N.H.) made 12 saves in his first game back after going down with an injury against RPI on Oct. 10.
UConn returns home to face Bentley College on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 7:05 p.m.
