STORRS, Conn. (Nov. 6) -- The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team fell to Mercyhurst College, 6-3 in its 2004-05 Atlantic Hockey opener at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on Saturday evening.
Capitalizing on two power play opportunities in the opening period, the Lakers took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission on goals by Scott Reynolds and Rich Hansen. Reynolds opened the scoring at 7:24 from David Wrigley and Hansen, while Hansen followed with his tally at the 14:12 mark from Wrigley.
Mercyhurst then jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second stanza on Wrigley’s fourth of the season, 5:02 into the period, with the assist going to Kyle Gourgon.
The Huskies began to mount a comeback as sophomore Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) put UConn on the board at 9:30 in the second off a feed from classmate J.R. Corkery (Salt Lake City, Utah) and then Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.) opened the third period with a power play goal at the 22-second mark from senior captain Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and Koidahl, cutting Mercyhurst’s lead to one.
The Lakers answered with two tallies of their own in the third, however, from Gourgon and Ryan Toomey at 7:21 and 11:33, respectively.
UConn fought back as Scherer managed to net his second power play goal of the evening from Koidahl at 14:25, but Mercyhurst sealed the victory with an empty net goal by Dave Borrelli at 19:09 in the final stanza.
Andy Franck stopped 30 shots in net for Mercyhurst, while freshman Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.) made 25 saves for Connecticut.
The Huskies next travel to Big Rapids, Mich. on Nov. 12th and 13th, for a two-game series against Ferris State with the contests slated for 7:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., respectively.
