STORRS, Conn. (Dec. 3) -- The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team suffered a 3-2 loss to Canisius College in Atlantic Hockey action at the Freitas Ice Forum on Friday evening. UConn falls to 2-10-1 on the year with a 1-4-0 record in Atlantic Hockey while the Golden Griffins improve to 6-1-0 in the conference, 7-6-1 overall.
The Huskies opened the scoring at 8:35 in the first as senior Beau McLaughlin (Virginia Beach, Va.) capitalized on a turnover by Canisius and wristed one high past goaltender Bryan Worosz for UConn’s first shorthanded goal of the season.
Just over two minutes later, the Golden Griffins answered after freshman netminder Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.) made the inital save, but the puck came to Andrew Dawe on the rebound and he sent it into the back of the net.
Sophomore Eric Helstedt (Minot, N.D.) was able to take the goal back for UConn as he found himself alone at the goal mouth and capitalized on a feed from McLauglin and classmate Bill Magnuson (Rochdale, Mass.) at the 13:10 mark.
Canisus followed, however, with the fourth and final goal of the first stanza at 18:01 as Fred Coccimiglio notched a power play tally from Joe Coccimiglio and David Kasch.
The teams would play a scoreless second period before Ryan Corcoran managed to score the eventual game-winner for the Golden Griffins 6:56 into the third with assists going to Joel Kitchen and Michael Cohen.
With under two minutes remaining, senior captain Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) threatened to bring the Huskies back with a quality scoring chance on a partial breakaway and then netting a goal with 14.7 seconds remaining that was waived off because of a man in the crease.
Worosz stopped 38 shots in net for Canisius and Smith made 26 saves. UConn went 0-4 on the power play while Canisius was 1-6.
