Charde Houston Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

STORRS, Conn. (December 7, 2004) — University of Connecticut freshman Charde Houston (San Diego, Calif.) has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the period ending Dec. 5, conference officials announced today.
Houston averaged the second-highest scoring average on the squad at 13.5 ppg while also pulling down 7.0 rebounds per game during UConn’s 2-0 week which featured wins over South Florida and Holy Cross.
Houston opened the week with her first career double-double performance as she tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds in UConn’s 75-65 win over South Florida on Dec. 1. Houston, who shot a solid 62.5 percent from the field last week, posted a 7-of-11 clip from the field in the win over the Bulls.
The 6-1 guard closed out the week with a 14-point performance against Holy Cross despite playing just 19 minutes. She also added four rebounds, three assists and a steal in the win over Holy Cross.
This week’s honor marks the first time Houston has been honored by the conference and the first time the BIG EAST has recognized a UConn player with a weekly honor this season.
Houston, the 2004 BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year, is averaging 11.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and is shooting .621 (18-of-29) from the field over the first four games this season.
The Huskies return to action when they host Hartford on Tuesday, Dec. 7at the Hartford Civic Center. Tip time is set for 7:00 p.m. (ET).
