PRINCETON, N.J. (Feb. 7) - The University of Connecticut men’s track and field team recorded their third first-place finish this season at the Princeton-Penn State Triangular Meet held in Princeton, N.J. on Saturday. The Huskies took wins in nine individual events and finished with 136.5 team points to come out 24 points ahead of second-place Penn State. UConn's season record now stands at 11-0.
Joe DiCola (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) was a double winner for UConn, taking first in the pole vault with a mark of 4.95 meters, and first in the long jump with a mark of 7.04 meters. The Huskies took five top spots in track events, with Kelechi Ndu (Mansfield, Conn.) winning the 60-meter dash, Basil Campbell (Ewing, N.J.) taking first in the 60-meter high hurdles, Joel Legare (Holden, Mass.) taking first in the 800-meter run, Logan Jones (Dorchester, Mass.) winning the 500-meter dash and Ken Goglas (Randolph, N.J.) winning the 3000-meter run.
UConn was strong in the field events with four first-place finishes, including the two by DiCola, and two second-place finishes. Two-time All-American Will Thomas (South Kingstown, R.I.) won the high jump and Mark Godoy (Amityville, N.Y.) took the top spot in the triple jump.
The two relay events took place on Friday at the 2004 Verizon Millrose Games held at Madison Square Garden. The Huskies needed the strong performances they turned in at Princeton, after trailing both Penn State and Princeton after the relays with a third-place finish in the 4x800 and a fourth-place finish in the 4x400.
The team will return to action on Saturday, February 14 when they travel to Boston, Mass. to compete in the Fast Track Invitational.
