Huskies Gain First Half Lead but Fall to UNC

CHAPEL HILL, NC (March 10) – The Connecticut women’s lacrosse team held a first half lead but could not hold off No. 9 North Carolina falling 12-8 on Wednesday afternoon in Chapel Hill, NC during the Huskies spring break week. UConn drops to 0-3 on the early season while North Carolina improves to 4-1 overall.
Connecticut used five different players to score all of its first half goals heading into the locker rooms at halftime with the 5-3 advantage against this top-ten team. The five-goal half was led by junior Heather McHugh’s (Bel Air, MD) two goals. Connecticut got off to a quick start in the game scoring 40-seconds into the contest on McHugh’s first tally. UConn dominated its stat column in the first 30-minutes but the numbers dropped as Connecticut was outscored 9-3 in the second half of play.
The second half was dominated by North Carolina as Kelly Renzi tallied a hat trick and Allison Higgins and Beth Ames each scored two goals apiece. UConn’s Kariane Lauri (Memphis, NY) played a part in all three second half goals scoring two and assisting on the first of the stanza. She also added a first half goal for the Huskies. The Tar Heel’s scored four straight goals to open the second half and take the 7-5 lead. Then, after UConn’s Shannon Burke (Camillus, NY) brought the Huskies within one goal, UNC scored back-to-back goals by Renzi and McCarthy to take the 9-6 edge.
UConn’s Tracy Mullaney (Cockeysville, MD) assisted on the last goal of the game having scored at least one point in her last eight games. Jennifer Wong (Cherry Creek, CO) started in her third game this season making nine saves in goal.
North Carolina head coach Jenny Levy captured her 100th career win in the Tar Heel’s win over Connecticut.
The Huskies will return to action against Towson on Sunday, March 14 at 1:00 pm in Maryland.
