Barth, Legare and Pisano Set to Compete at NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, TX (June 8) - Three University of Connecticut mens track and field athletes will be competing beginning Wednesday, June 9 at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas. Seniors John Barth (South Kingstown, R.I.) and Paul Pisano (Toms River, N.J.) along with junior Joel Legare (Holden, Mass.) have all qualified to take part.

Barth will be competing in the hammer throw, having qualified by virtue of a fifth-place and personal-best throw of 62.63 meters (205-6) at the NCAA East Regional. The mark ranks among the top 30 in the country this season, and Barth is competing at an NCAA Championship for the first time.

Legare is also making his first NCAA Championship appearance, and will compete in the 800-meter run. Legare qualified with a time of 1:48.72 at the NCAA East Regional where he placed fifth in the event. His top time this season of 1:48.54 ranks among the top 30 times in the country.

Pisano is a veteran at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, having earned two previous All-America javelin titles in two appearances at the meet. Pisano qualified by placing second at the NCAA East Regional with a mark of 74.28 meters (243-8), but his top mark this season of 77.47 meters (254-2) broke his own school record and ranks as the third-best mark in the country going into this weeks championships.

Updated Schedule: Pisano will be the first to compete when the prelims of the javelin take place at 12:30 p.m. (CST) on Thursday, June 10.  Barth will compete in the prelims of the hammer throw at 5:00 p.m. (CST) on Thursday, and Legare will run the 800-meter prelims at 7:00 p.m. (CST). Should he advance, the final will take place at 8:45 p.m. (CST) on Saturday, June 12.  The javelin finals are at 3:15 p.m. (CST) on Saturday, and the hammer finals are at 4:00 p.m. (CST) on Saturday.
