STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 17) - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team lost a tough battle by a score of 1-0 to No. 2 University of Notre Dame Friday night at Morrone Stadium. The contest marked the beginning of the 2004 BIG EAST season for both teams as the Huskies moved to 2-4-0 overall to the Irish's 7-0-0 record.
The game was evenly played with most of the action taking place in the midfield. The best UConn scoring chance of the night came on a shot by senior midfielder Zahra Jalalian (Auburn, Wash.) that went off the crossbar, with the rebound put on goal by fellow senior Jessica Gjertsen (Stony Plain, Alberta). Gjertsen's shot on net was one of two she registered for the Huskies, the only two shots on goal for UConn.
The contest remained scoreless until the 83:34 mark. The single goal of the game was scored by Amanda Cinalli off a feed from Kate Tulisiak. The Huskies made a team save on a shot by the Irish, but the rebound fell to Tulisiak who was able to pass it through Connecticut defenders to Cinalli. Notre Dame put nine shots on goal, as the Irish outshot UConn 18-8.
UConn will next face Oregon at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19 at Morrone Stadium.
