Huskies Skate Past Quinnipiac, 4-1
Tomes Posts Career High 48 Saves for the Huskies
NORTHFORD, Conn. (Jan. 14) – The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team used three late goals to skate to a 4-1 victory over Quinnipiac in Atlantic Hockey action at the Northford Ice Pavilion on Friday evening. UConn improves to 5-14-2 on the season with a 4-6-1 record in Atlantic Hockey while the Bobcats fall to 6-10-3, 3-4-2 in the AHA.
The Huskies grabbed an early lead as sophomore Bill Magnuson (Rochdale, Mass.) and classmate Jarret Scarpaci (Billerica, Mass.) fed the puck to junior Aaron Kakepetum (Balmertown, Ontario) in the slot and he fired it past Bobcats goaltender Josh Siembida 1:48 into the first period. UConn netminder Scott Tomes (Windham, N.H.) helped preserve the 1-0 lead as he denied Matt Craig at the doorstep at the 15:42 mark of the stanza.
Quinnipiac then managed to even the score at one with Ben Nelson’s tally from Michael Bordieri and Peter Alden 8:42 into the second.
With just minutes left to play in regulation, freshman John Stockler (Princeton, Minn.) posted the game winner for Connecticut at the 17:48 mark of the third period from senior captain Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.).
The Huskies then cemented the victory with empty net goals from sophomore Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash) and freshman Charles Solberg (Barrington, Ill.) at 18:37 and 19:31, respectively.
The Bobcats outshot the Huskies 49-28, while Tomes made a career-high 48 saves in net for UConn and Siembida stopped 24 shots for Quinnipiac.
Connecticut returns to the ice tomorrow evening, Jan. 15, when it plays host to Quinnipiac at 7:00 p.m.
