Men’s Hockey Falls to Yale, 6-2
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Jan. 22) – The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team suffered a 6-2 loss to Yale in non-conference action on Saturday at Ingalls Rink. UConn falls to 6-16-2 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 3-15-1 for the year.
Yale opened the scoring with a power play goal 4:39 into the first period. Brad Mills collected the first of his three tallys in the game for the Bulldogs from Jeff Hristovski and Robert Page. The Bulldogs then made it a 2-0 game with a goal by Jean-Franco Boucher at 12:07 with assists going to Shawn Mole and Blair Yaworski.
UConn junior Aaron Kakepetum (Balmertown, Ontario) cut the lead in half with a power play goal off a feed from sophomores B.J. Crum (Hampden, Mass.) and Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) 18:18 into the opening stanza.
The Bulldogs pushed the lead back to a two goal margin 48 seconds into the second period as Mole connected on a pass from Bill LeClerc. Connecticut answered with a power play tally from sophomore Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash) at 4:14 from Kakepetum and sophomore Bill Magnuson (Rochdale, Mass.), but Yale went on to score three unanswered goals, including two shorthanded by Mills, and secured the victory.
The Huskies were outshot 38-30 and were 2-for-8 in power play opportunities, and the Bulldogs were 2-for-5 on the power play. Sophomore netminder Scott Tomes (Windham, N.H.) and freshman Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.) combined for 32 saves in net for Connecticut, while Matt Modelski stopped 28 shots for Yale.
Connecticut returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 25, when the team travels to Providence, R.I., to take on Providence College at 7:00 p.m.
