PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 25) – The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team suffered a narrow, 4-3 setback to Providence College on Tuesday evening at Schneider Arena. UConn drops to 6-17-2 on the season while the Friars move to an overall record of 7-14-3.
Providence jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal by David Carpentier from Bryan Horan at the 7:51 mark of the first period. Sophomore Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.) then evened the score for the Huskies on the power play as he blasted a shot into the top of the Friars’ net, with assists going to classmate B.J. Crum (Hampden, Mass.) and junior Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) 19:47 into the opening stanza.
In the second period, Providence regained its lead and then added two more goals as James Pemberton scored his second of the season at 4:28 from Chase Watson and Carpentier. Torry Gajda followed with a tally at 8:12, connecting on a feed from Chris Chaput and Jamie Carroll. Tom Gallagher rounded out the second period scoring for the Friars 12:16 into the stanza, with an assist going to Watson.
The Huskies began a third period rally as Uber tipped in UConn’s second goal of the evening at the 4:21 mark off a feed from Scherer and senior captain Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) to bring the Huskies within two. Sophomore Bill Magnuson (Rochdale, Mass.) brought Connecticut within one, netting a power play goal at 18:22 from Crum and Scherer, but Providence was able to hang on to its one goal margin.
The Friars outshot the Huskies 43-17. Freshman goaltender Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.) stopped 39 shots and Tyler Simms made 14 saves in net for Providence College.
