Huskies Stung by American International, 3-2 in OT

STORRS, Conn. (Jan. 28) – The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team dropped a hearbreaking overtime loss to American International in Atlantic Hockey action Friday night at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 6-18-2 on the season with a 5-8-1 record in Atlantic Hockey, while AIC improves to 3-14-1 on the year with a 3-8-1 record in the conference.
Sophomore Bill Magnuson (Rochdale, Mass.) gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead 3:11 into the contest as he connected with a pass from sophomores Eric Helstedt (Minot, N.D.) and Jarret Scarpaci (Billerica, Mass.) and sent a one-timer high into the back of AIC’s net. The Yellow Jackets answered at 9:36 when a shot by C.J. McConnell found its way past sophomore Scott Tomes (Windham, N.H.), with assists going to Greg Genovese and Jeason Lecours.
The teams played a scoreless second period before junior Ryan Palmer (Groton, Mass.) notched UConn’s eighth power play goal over its past five games off a feed from classmate Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) and senior captain Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) 13:02 into the third stanza, but Jereme Tendler evened the score for AIC just 19 seconds later from Adam Sinewitz and Andy Walbert. Tendler then posted his second of the game 29 seconds into overtime to lead the Yellow Jackets to victory on a pass from Mark Pavli and Walbert.
Connecticut outshot American International, 52-34, while Frank Novello made 50 saves in net for AIC. Tomes stopped 34 shots in net for UConn.
The Huskies travel to Springfield, Mass., Saturday evening, Jan. 29, for the second game of the weekend series against American International.
