PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 10, 2005) - Chukwudi Chijindu (Fontana, Calif.) has been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday. The sophomore forward helped lead the 10th-ranked University of Connecticut men’s soccer team to two key conference wins in the last week over Providence and Notre Dame, extending the Huskies win streak to five games.
Chijindu came off the bench to score two goals and assisted on another in UConn's 3-2 overtime win against Providence on Wednesday. Having a hand in each of Connecticut's three goals, the sophomore helped the Huskies give Providence its first loss of the season. Chijindu assisted on an equalizer to bring the game to a 1-1 standstill at the 33:11 mark of the first half. He then tied the score at 2-2 midway through the second half. Chijindu then scored the game-winner 8:23 into the first overtime period from the center of the goalmouth after a cross into the box from the far corner.
The Huskies also defeated Notre Dame, 2-1, on Saturday for their fifth consecutive win.
UConn returns to action Saturday night at 7:00 when they welcome conference rival Pittsburgh to Morrone Stadium. Saturday’s game will mark 2005 High School Night, as the Huskies welcome high school teams from around the state. All Connecticut girl’s and boy’s high school teams who order their tickets in advance in groups of 25 or more will receive a special rate of only $2.00 per ticket.
