SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (October 15, 2005) - The University of Connecticut men's hockey team opened the 2005-06 regular season with a 4-4 tie to Union College on the Dutchmen's home ice. Senior captain Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.), junior co-captain Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.), junior Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) and freshman Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.) each scored a goal in the game. Koidahl registered three points on the night.
The Dutchmen opened the scoring at the 9:07 mark of the first half with a goal by Josh Coyle with assists from Olivier Bouchard and Lane Caffaro. In goal for the Huskies was sophomore Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.). Smith recorded 23 saves in the game with four goals allowed.
Seven minutes later, Koidahl responded with a power play goal to even the score, 1-1. Koidahl received an assist from junior B.J. Crum (Hampden, Mass.) on the play against Union goalkeeper Justin Mrazek. Mrazek had 18 saves on the day with four goals allowed.
Early in the second stanza the Dutchmen regained the lead on a goal by Bouchard with an assist by Coyle. At the 12:57 mark, Connecticut capitalized on another power play opportunity as Myhro scored off an assist by senior Aaron Kakepetum (Balmertown, Ont.) to tie the game at 2-2.
The Dutchmen took little time to answer back with their third goal of the evening as T.J. Fox accepted a pass from Caffaro and Bouchard and slid the puck past Smith. With just under a minute remaining in the second period, Scherer took control of a pass from Koidahl and sailed the puck into the net.
The scored was tied 3-3 at the start of the third stanza before the Dutchmen scored their fourth and final goal of the game. Augie DiMarzo, with an assist from Rory Farrell, took Union's final lead of the game, 4-3.
Just over the midway point of the final period, Husky captain Uber signaled the lights and buzzers again for the Huskies with a power play goal. Uber tied the scored, 4-4, with assists from Koidahl and freshman Sean Erickson (Eden Prairie, Minn.).
During overtime, the Huskies managed just one shot while the Dutchmen tried for three. All shots were saved and the Huskies came out of their first game of the 2005-06 season with a 4-4 tie.
Connecticut will be back on the ice next weekend as it faces off against Merrimack on Oct. 21 and 22. Both games are slated for 7:00 p.m. at Merrimack.
