NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (October 21, 2005) - The University of Connecticut men's hockey team fell to Merrimack, 3-1, in its second game of the 2005-06 season. Freshman Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored the lone goal for the Huskies as their record drops to 0-1-1.
Merrimack jumped out to an early lead with a power play goal at the 6:15 mark of the first stanza. Merrimack's Mike Alexiou picked up a loose puck and found Matt Johnson at the right circle of the Huskies' defensive half. Johnson maneuvered around the Husky defense and slid the puck between Connecticut goal minder Scott Tomes (Windham, N.H.) and the near post to take the lead, 1-0. The Warriors bombarded Tomes with a total of 15 shots in the first period compared to just five by the Huskies.
Connecticut came out strong in the second period, evening the score with a power play goal less than a minute and a half into the stanza. Myhro took a feed from his classmate, Eric Dahlberg (Duluth, Minn.) at the left faceoff circle and set off the lights and buzzers with a low screen shot past Merrimack goaltender, Jim Healey.
In the third period, UConn suffered four penalties that gave Merrimack several power play advantages. Warrior Jeff Royston scored the game-winner at the 1:33 mark of the stanza. Royston, with assists from Mike Fournier and Brian Boulay, flipped the puck into the top of the net to take the lead, 2-1.
Halfway through the final period, the Warriors capitalized on a power play situation for the second time to run away with the game. Alexiou, with help from Brett Gough and Johnson, and one-timed the puck past Tomes. The score would stay 3-1 for the remainder of the game.
Despite recording the loss, Tomes played a solid game for the Huskies. He made a total of 34 saves while allowing three goals. Healey made 15 saves for the Warriors. Both teams were rough on the ice, with Merrimack sending eight players to the penalty box and UConn sending nine.
The Huskies will face-off against Merrimack again on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7:00.
