Huskies Drop 5-2 Decision to Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. (October 28, 2005) - The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team fell to Mercyhurst, 5-2, on Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Captains Chris Uber (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.) were the only Huskies to score in the game. The Huskies drop to 1-2-1 and the Lakers improve to 2-1-0.
In the first 25 minutes of play, both Mercyhurst and UConn scored power play goals to set the score at 1-1. Uber had Connecticut’s first goal, accepting assists from junior Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Scherer. Ben Cottreau put Mercyhurst ahead, 2-1, in the middle period and forward Chris Trafford increased its lead to 3-1 by the end of the second half. The Huskies got within one on Scherer’s goal, beating Mercyhurst’s goalie, Mike Ella, to the right. Koidahl and Uber recorded assists on the play. Less than a minute later, the Lakers regained their two-goal lead on a goal by Kyle Gourgon. Kerry Bowman finished the game scoring by setting off the lights and buzzers at the 4:42 mark of the third period. Husky freshman goalie Jon Anderson (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) was in goal for 45 minutes, making 27 saves. Sophomore Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.) came in for the final 15 minutes and made four saves. The Huskies will skate against Mercyhurst again on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.
