STORRS, Conn. (November 10, 2005) - The University of Connecticut women's soccer team fell to Boston University, 1-0, in double overtime in the first round of the women's soccer NCAA tournament on Thursday evening. The game marks the first loss for the Huskies in Morrone Stadium this season, and the first time the team has lost in the first round of the tournament since 1993. The Huskies finish their season with a 15-5-2 overall record and 10-1-0 in the BIG EAST.
Boston University advances to the second round of the tournament and faces Boston College Saturday in Storrs at 12:00 p.m. BC was a 2-1 winner over Dartmouth in another first round game in Storrs on Thursday night.
The teams played evenly throughout the game, both recording 15 total shots. In the first half, UConn took seven shots, five of which were on goal. Freshman Brittany Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) led the offensive charge with three shots for the Huskies. One of Taylor's shots deflected off the post and into the goal, but Terrier goalie, Christina Reuter snagged the ball out of the air as it was sailing into the back of the net. Following her lead was fellow classmate, Brittany Tegeler (Baldwin, Md.), who had two shots in the game. Meghan Schnur (Butler, Pa.) also contributed to the Husky offense with three shots, one of which barely grazed the cross bar and bounced out of the net.
The Huskies suffered a major loss to their defensive line in the first half with an ankle injury within the first five minutes of the game for sophomore Karyn Riviere (Guilford, Conn.). The Connecticut native has been a powerhouse in the backfield, having contributed to six shutouts.
The winning goal for the Terriers came at the 102:28 mark of the game. Ashley Chassar headed a pass from Ashley Locasale into the back to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
