Men's Hockey Falls To Holy Cross, 4-1

STORRS, Conn. (November 4, 2005) - The University of Connecticut men's ice hockey team fell to Holy Cross, 4-1, on Friday evening in the team's 2005-06 home opener at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. With the loss, the Huskies slip to 1-4-1 overall, 0-3-0 in the Atlantic Hockey Conference, while Holy Cross remains undefeated with a record of 4-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first period, as UConn sophomore goaltender Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.) had six saves and Tony Quesada stopped all 13 of UConn's shots in the period. Holy Cross got things started offensively in the second stanza, as Pierre Napert-Frenette tallied the first goal of the game just 1:47 into the period on the power play. He was assisted by Blair Bartlett and Tyler McGregor on the score. McGregor put Holy Cross's second goal in the back of the net 5:09 into the period, again on the power play with and assist from Napert-Frenette.
Junior B.J. Crum (Hampden, Mass.) put the Huskies on the board with a power play goal at the 14:11 mark in the second stanza. He was assisted by classmates Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.) on the play to bring the Huskies within one to close out the period.
Holy Cross came right back to start the final period, as Shane McAdam picked up his first goal of the game on the power play just 2:58 into the stanza off assists from Marc Bianchi and Napert-Frenette. Jon Landry closed out the goal scoring for Holy Cross at the 16:25 mark in the third. He was assisted by McGregor and McAdam on the play.
For the game, Smith had 24 saves while playing all 60 minutes. Both teams were rough on the ice, as the Huskies sent 12 men to be penalty box and Holy Cross sent 13. UConn out-shot Holy Cross, 30-28, for the game.
The Huskies will be in action next on Saturday, Nov. 5 when they travel to Holy Cross for a 7:00 p.m. start.
