SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (December 3, 2005) - The University of Connecticut men's hockey team ended a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over American International on Saturday night at the Olympia Ice Center. With this win, the Connecticut improves to 4-7-1 overall and 3-6-0 in the Atlantic Hockey Association. AIC drops to 1-9-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the AHA.
UConn took the early advantage with a goal at the 3:54 mark of the first stanza when Trevor Stewart (Elk River, Minn.) rebounded his own shot attempt that had grazed off the pipe and slid the puck past AIC's Tom Fenton. The lead would not last long as the Yellow Jackets capitalized on a power play less than three minutes later.
Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.) played the puck behind the net, buy was unable to completely clear it. The puck found AIC's Andy Walbert with a shot on the open net.
The Huskies regained their lead 8:35 into the second period when Matt Scherer
(Seattle, Wash.) came out of the penalty box and took a breakaway pass from Brian Burns (Binghamton, N.Y.) and found the back of the net to bring the score to 2-1.
The score would remain the same until the final buzzer. Smith made a total of 28 saves on the night. The Huskies out-shot the Yellow Jackets 33-29, but were still unable to take advantage on a power play opportunity.
The Huskies are back on the ice on Dec. 8 at Sacred Heart at 7:00 p.m.
