MILFORD, Conn. (December 8, 2005) - Freshman Chris Myrho (Eden Prairie, Minn.) netted the game-winner with 11:53 left in regulation to claim the University of Connecticut men's hockey team's second straight victory, 2-1, on Thursday night against Sacred Heart. Goalie Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich.) made 43 saves to help secure the victory for Connecticut. The Huskies improve to 5-7-1 overall and 4-6-0 in Atlantic Hockey play.
Myhro's eighth goal of the season came off a pass from junior J.R. Corkey (Salt Lake City, Utah) that was well timed, allowing Myrho to skate in and flip the shot over Pioneer goaltender Jason Smith’s left shoulder. The current Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week made 27 saves on the night for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart's five penalties in the first period allowed for UConn to spend much of the first stanza in power play mode, but they were unable to convert on the opportunities. They did manage to score at the 2:04 mark of the stanza on a goal by sophomore John Stockler (Princeton, Minn.), his first of the season. He was assisted on the play by Charles Solberg (Barrington, Ill.) and Trevor Stewart (Elk River, Minn.). Stockler moved in on an initial shot that was taken by Solberg and tipped it past Smith to tally Connecticut's first goal.
Rocco Molinaro tied the game for the Pioneers with 5:12 left in the second period off a pass from Andrew Billinghurst. Molinaro skated in and chipped a shot under the left arm of Smith to tie the game at one.
Sacred Heart out-shot Connecticut 44-29, but they were unable to tie the game in the third period. Smith's solid performance in the net earned him his second straight win of the season for the Huskies.
The Huskies will face-off against the Pioneers again on Friday night at the Huskies' home ice at 7:05 p.m. on the Storrs campus.
