Huskies Suffer 3-1 Setback against Mercyhurst
ERIE, Pa. (Feb. 19) – The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss to Mercyhurst in Atlantic Hockey action at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Saturday evening. The Huskies fall to 11-21-2 on the year with the loss, and to 10-11-1 Atlantic Hockey, while Mercyhurst moves its record to 10-7-3 in league play with an overall record of 11-15-4.
Scott Reynolds put the Lakers out in front, 1-0, with a goal from T.J. Kemp and Kyle Gourgon 3:23 into the first period.
Mercyhurst then extended its advantage at 1:55 in the second stanza on a power play tally by Gourgon from Ben Cottreau and Reynolds. Scott Champagne added the team’s third score at the 10:19 mark in the second, with assists going to David Wrigley and Preston Briggs.
Sophomore Matt Scherer (Seattle, Wash.) posted UConn’s only goal of the evening at 5:52 in the third from senior captain Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and senior Mark Murphy (Jamestown, R.I.).
Lakers’ goaltender Mike Ella turned aside 31 of the Huskies’ shots and sophomore Scott Tomes (Windham, N.H.) made 24 saves in net for Connecticut.
UConn outshot Mercyhurst, 32-27 and the Lakers went 1-for-3 in power play opportunities, while the Huskies were 0-for-6.
Connecticut will remain idle until Tuesday, March 1, when the team travels to Springfield, Mass., to face American International at 7:00 p.m.
